Frequently Asked Questions

The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin is a 501(C)(3) non profit incorporated in 1986 to promote the knowledge, enjoyment and stewardship of Wisconsin's natural resources.

What kind of organization is NRF?

Natural Resources Foundation is a publicly supported 501(c)(3) charitable organization governed by a board of private citizens. We receive funding, individual, corporate and foundation gifts and grants.  NRF's Federal Tax ID # is 39-1572034.

When and why was NRF formed?

NRF was founded in 1986 to raise private support for public conservation efforts in Wisconsin. NRF works with public and private partners to deepen their understanding and appreciation of these natural resources; support state and local conservation programs; and establish conservation endowments.

What is NRF's relationship to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources?

NRF enjoys a "friends group" relationship with the DNR, providing financial support to prominent field biologists and scientists working on programs that benefit our state’s natural resources. We have provided nearly $2.0 million to DNR-sponsored conservation projects since 1986.

What programs is NRF involved with?

In addition to funding DNR conservation efforts, NRF provides small, match grants to grassroots conservation and environmental education projects throughout the state through our Besadny Conservation Grant Program. We are members of the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership and are working to reintroduce the endangered whooping crane to Wisconsin. We sponsor field trips led by DNR professionals that give the public the opportunity to experience our unique resources. Through our State Natural Areas Campaign, we have been working to meet the management needs of the last of the best of our state's most threatened landscapes and the endangered species they harbor. We offer individuals the opportunity to support the conservation issue they care most about by creating a named, edowed fund through the Wisconsin Conservation Endowment.
