Successful conservation requires a public that both cares and is informed about natural resource values and the importance of resource protection and stewardship. NRF supports statewide environmental and outdoor education initiatives to encourage a stewardship ethic in our citizens and youth, and leads over 90 field trips annually for members to explore Wisconsin.
In 2007 & 2008, NRF is seeking support for the following projects:
Junior Ranger/Wisconsin Explorer Program
These series of activity books help children and their families connect with state park properties and their natural resources. New materials and supplements will be developed and printed in 2008. These will include property-specific materials for selected parks, the first pre-school activity book, and additional books for grades K-3 and grades 4 and up.
Wildlife education videos/curriculum for biologists and teachers
These DVDs will be used at 30
Wild Cards for game animals and birds
The very popular “Wild Card” series lacks all game mammals and birds (except furbearers). There is a high demand for cards on these animals. 50,000 copies will be printed of each of 15 new animals.
Project Learning Tree early childhood guide with CD
This popular guide integrates music, movement, exploration, reading, listening, and art into 35 early childhood activities related to nature. The guide was developed in 2003, is widely used, and is available only through workshops. It is also out of print. Plans call for revising and reprinting 2,000 copies, including CD.
EEK! – Environmental Education for Kids online games and quizzes
This electronic magazine for ages 4-8 provides children, parents, and teachers with information on
Wisconsin Master Naturalist Program – Start-up
Modeled after other Master Naturalist programs in other states, this program will train volunteer naturalists who will work on resource management and interpretive programs at DNR properties and other public lands. Funds are needed to hire a program coordinator who will develop a training curriculum, plan and present training workshops, and publicize and implement the program.
